A friend, a colleague, a well-meaning relative, or perhaps a tip from a so-called market expert on a business channel. The conversation goes something like this:
INTRODUCTION: THE STOCK MARKET IS NOT A CASINO Every day, in boardrooms across Karachi, at dinner tables in Lahore, and through WhatsApp groups from Peshawar to Gwadar, the same scene plays out. Someone mentions a stock. A friend, a colleague, a well-meaning relative, or perhaps a tip from a so-called market expert on a business channel. The conversation goes something like this:
"Yaar, have you seen what OGDC is doing? It's going to hit 200 soon. Buy it!"
Or perhaps:
"My cousin who works at a brokerage says Lucky Cement is about to announce a massive dividend. Get in now before it's too late!"
And just like that, without a moment's hesitation, thousands of Pakistani investors open their mobile trading apps and place buy orders. No research. No analysis. No understanding of what they're actually purchasing. Just blind faith in a tip.
